How do I know if Black Greek Life is for me?
This is the initial question most aspiring members ask themselves...is this really for me? Becoming part of a National Black Fraternity or Sorority is a lot of hard work. It can be extremely time consuming, demanding most of your free-time outside of school, work, and any other obligations you might have. At times, you may feel frustrated, overwhelmed, and did I mention with every organization, it's guaranteed to have it's fair share of Drama. Fraternities and Sororities are not for everyone, and there are some key attributes one must have to be able to handle and manage the day-to-day activity of being in a Black Greek Organization.
First and foremost...you must be a "Team Player". Understand there is no person who is bigger than the organization itself. The organization would not exist without a group effort to continuously reach for higher excellence within their respective organization. So if you think you're doing the frat or sorority a favor by joining.....you might want to reconsider.
One key attribute you will also need is patience. If you do not have the ability to be patient, you will have a very difficult time being in a Black Greek Organization. There will be debates, disagreements, arguments, and possibly altercations between members of the same organization. You will need to be able to control your emotions at times and be able to work with different people from all different walks of life. If you feel that you get angry or upset easily, have a short temper, or find yourself not wanting to "deal with people" on a regular basis, Black Greek Life may not be for you.
The last and most important factor to determining if Black Greek Life is for you is simply....your motives. Why do you want to be part of a National Black Fraternity or Sorority? Do you like the organization's colors, as you think they would go well with a lot of outfits you already have? Do you want to be "liked" by your peers? Do you want to become popular and have superstar-like status at your College or University? Do you want to be the center of attention at every party and event you attend because you're just "so great"? Do you want people to view you as "that dude" or "that chick" on campus?
Unfortunately....I have to pull out my imaginary needle and bust that "make-believe" bubble, because it is not reality. As I've stated in my videos....If you are not already a "superstar" at your College or University, wearing a t-shirt with 3 Greek letters across it is not going to put you on that status level either. If you were well-known by your peers and active on campus before, you will just make the organization you pledge look even better. If nobody knew you prior, or you were best described as a "Lame" before....sorry to break the news but you will just be a "Lame with Letters".
Understand that becoming a Black Greek will only enhance the skills you already have, thus enhancing the type of person you already are. There is a perception that Black Greeks have this all-mighty status and are so "high up", when in reality, they're regular people just like me and you. My point in outlining the motives described above are typical reasons why the majority of people want to become Greek, find out what's required/what being Greek is all about, and usually turn the other direction and run as fast as possible (not literally but you get the point). I don't want to list the "correct" reasons for why someone should want to become a Black Greek because that is up to you to decide. And if you are Greek, why did you become Greek? What were your motives?
Hopefully this brief insight has influenced more awareness to those of you interested in Black Greek Letter Organizations and those of you who have made it to the other side. I am not here to prevent nor promote Black Greek Life, I am only here to shed my knowledge and insight based on my experiences. Once you've determined whether Black Greek Life is a path you would like to take, you will need to decide which organization best fits you.
